Did You Know?
-
Sammy didn't start playing baseball until the age of 14. Sosa couldn't afford
equipment, so like many kids in Latin American countries he made a
glove out of milk cartons, a bat out of a tree branch and a ball made of a
rolled up sock with tape around it.
-
Sammy was the first Latin American to ever reach the
milestone of being a member of the 500-Homer club.
-
Slammin' Sammy is a 6-time All-Star (1995, 1998-2002).
-
Sammy had four straight seasons with an amazing 50+
HR (1998-2001), hitting 60+ three of those seasons (1998-99,
2001). Babe
Ruth, Roger
Maris and
Barry Bonds have
combined for three seasons with 60+ HR.
-
Sammy was the first Cubs player to reach 30 homers and 30
steals and he did it twice (1993, 1995).
-
In 1998, Sammy not only
won the MVP in impressive fashion over Mark McGwire and led the Cubbies to the
playoffs, but he also won the Roberto
Clemente Man of the Year award.
