Did You Know?

  • Derek was selected with the 6th overall pick in the 1992 June draft by the Yankees.

  • Derek originally wanted the #13 jersey when he signed with the Pinstripes.  Since that number was taken, he was awarded #2, which is one of the two remaining prestigious single-digit numbers not retired by the Yankees.  The other single-digit jersey not retired is worn by current skipper Joe Torre.

  • Derek won Rookie of the Year honors in unanimous fashion in 1996, as well as his first of  four World Series rings in Pinstripes.  During that championship run, Derek hit the now famous clutch "home run" on October 9, 1996 that was swiped by young fan Jeffrey Maier, over the head of Orioles outfielder Tony Tarasco, in Game 1 of the ALCS.

  • Derek has a career .317 BA entering the 2004 season, which places him 5th on the active players list behind only Todd Helton, Nomar Garciaparra, Vladimir Guerrero and Mike Piazza.

  • During the 1999 season, Derek enjoyed a streak of reaching base in 53 consecutive games, breaking a record that went all the way back to 1961.

  • During the 2000 campaign, DJ racked up some more hardware.  He won the World Series MVP, leading the Yankees to their 3rd straight ring.  Plus, it was his 4th ring in only 5 full seasons played, a streak that any MLB player would love to have.

  • DJ may not have the power stroke like A-Rod, Nomar or Tejada, but the man is a Hits and Runs machine.  His 162-game average of 200+ Hits and 120+ Runs is unbelievable.

  • When Derek broke the 200-hit plateau for the first time in 1998, he joined Hall-of-Famer Phil Rizzuto as the only other Yankee Shortstop to accomplish that feat.

  • In 2002 Jeter and teammate Bernie Williams tied the  MLB record for consecutive years for teammates both having 100+ runs scored.

  • Derek is a 5 time all star (1998-2002).

  • Is there anything Derek hasn't done on the diamond? You can scratch stealing home off the list because he accomplished that on May 5, 2001 against the Baltimore Orioles.
