Did You Know?
- Alfonso got his first big
league hit off Norm Charlton (September 24, 1999) when he led off in the
bottom of the 11th in a 3-3 game. He drove the ball in the left field seats
before 40,000+ at historic Yankee Stadium.
- Alfonso was quickly
recognized as one of the elite prospects in the majors. When Anaheim was
shopping Jim Edmonds around, GM Brian Cashman turned
down a one-for-one offer. He was also the main man in a proposed deal for Moises Alou. However, Alou
vetoed the trade and helped save the Yankees years of embarrassment.
- Alfonso finished his
2001 rookie season by leading all AL rookies in homers (18), doubles (34), and
RBIs (73). He finished 3rd in Rookie of the Year voting behind Ichiro
Suzuki and
C.C. Sabathia.
- Alfonso had team highs for
the Yankees in 2001 in triples, steals and games played. Also, his
11 homers out of the 9-hole led all major leaguers.
- Alfonso finally made it to
the lead off spot in 2002 and quickly showed Yankees management he belonged
there. He recorded his first 5-hit ballgame against the Blue Jays.
His day included a pair of doubles, a dinger, and 5 runs scored. He later made the
All-Star team and even hit a long ball in the Mid-Summer Classic.
- The
sky seems to be the limit for Alfonso. He finished the 2002 campaign by not
only becoming the first 30-30 man ever at 2nd base but he batted .300 with 39
round trippers, 102 RBIs, 51 doubles and 41 steals. His 3rd place finish
in the MVP
voting capped off one of the greatest years ever by a lead-off hitter.
